Plaque for Beacon on Galley Hill

The Beacon on Galley Hill was donated by Bexhill Old Town Preservation Society to Rother District Council in 2016. The Beacon was originally commissioned to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar on the 21st October 2005.

On 28th July 2022 a plaque was installed on Galley Hill to mark the Society’s gift of this Beacon.

It has taken quite a while to bring this about as permission was required from Rother District Council, but we hope that it will prove to be useful publicity for the Society as the location attracts many visitors. The Beacon is also available to hire through Rother District Council via this link

We are grateful to Rhett Thompson of Thompson Advertising Signs who designed, made and installed the plaque for us.  The installation proved a challenge due to the lack of rain making the ground very hard – thank you Rhett for persevering!

On Thursday 2nd June 2022 at 9.30pm, the Beacon was lit along with a series of Beacons across the country and Commonwealth as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
