Schools’ Visit

On Friday 1st May, we welcomed 200 local school children to the Old Town from St Peter & St Paul CE primary school, All Saints CE primary school and Chantry Community primary school. The children enjoyed a tour of the Old Town area that included Barrack Hall Memorial Gardens where Christine Madeley of Bexhill Historical Society spoke to them about the King’s German Legion; the Manor Barn where Tina Brown told them about the history of the building and gardens; and St Peter’s church where Julian Porter of Bexhill Museum spoke to them about the history of the Old Town and showed them an exhibition he had specially compiled for us. BOTPS member Dr Roger Elias was also there to tell them about the history of the church – including a chance to swing on the bell ropes! They also enjoyed refreshments at the community centre and then back to the church for a wonderful concert by acclaimed trumpeter, Crispian Steele-Perkins. It really was a wonderful morning – not exactly stress-free but definitely worth the effort! It really did open the eyes of the children to the history right on their doorstep.
